about us

GreenTrans is a non-profit organization which looks for long term solutions to environmental, social, and economic problems generated by current modes of transportation.

GreenTrans was started in December 2000 by a group of Oakville residents with environmental concerns. Its membership now includes residents of the surrounding communities as well as interested parties currently residing in other parts of Canada.

Its overarching goals are improved public health and a more sustainable lifestyle, focusing on sustainable modes of transportation such as public transit, walking, and cycling. GreenTrans works toward its goals by advocating sustainable transportation policies with government, by developing and maintaining connections with other like-minded organizations, and by increasing public awareness of transportation alternatives through:

  • submitting letters to local newspapers,
  • providing informational displays at public fairs and festivals,
  • maintaining an informational website, and
  • organizing public events.

Public events in Oakville that GreenTrans has organized or assisted with include:

  • Transport 2000 Ontario AGM and Public Workshop (March 2003)
  • Clean Air Picnic (September 2003)
  • Backwoods Bike Tour (October 2004)
  • Summer Fun Bus Day for Kids, Oakville (July 2005, 2006)
  • Car-Free Day event at Bronte Autumn Fest (Sept. 2005, 2006)
  • Holiday Shopping by Bus (December 2005)
  • Summer Fun Bus Day for Kids, Burlington (July 2006)

GreenTrans members meet regularly and have worked cooperatively with several local and provincial organizations to promote environmentally sustainable transportation. GreenTrans has been a member of the Halton Environmental Network since that organization's inception in 2004. GreenTrans is a CORE member of the Town of Oakville. GreenTrans maintains links with Transport 2000 Ontario, a broader-based group with a mandate similar to that of GreenTrans. In 2006, GreenTrans became a member of the Conservation Council of Ontario, a province-wide association of organizations and individuals dedicated to conservation and a healthy environment.

Executive members for 2007 are:

Chair Lisa Seiler
Vice-Chair Peter Pellier
Treasurer Ron Bobker
